Springfield's Restaurant and Bar arrives in Kings Cross.
Kings Cross has been given an injection of international sophistication with the opening of Springfield's Restaurant and Bar on Darlinghurst Road.
An eye-catching orchid motif at the entrance of the venue sets the stylish tone for this Manhattan-meets-Sydney supper club, which also has more than a dash of LA glamour thrown in for good measure.
"The main concept we brought back from New York and LA is that there doesn't have to be such a distinction between restaurants and bars" explains licensee Erica Goldfinch. "Venues can be a bit more multi-dimensional and the idea was to create a space that felt like it didn't have rules. You don't have to eat in a certain section and drink in another area. Everything in Sydney is either a bar, a restaurant or a club and we want to mix it up and be a bit of everything."
Spread over three levels, Springfield's comprises of a gallery level restaurant, a light and airy main floor that's perfect for cocktails and casual communal dining and the intimate lower level lounge bar.
Subscribing to the supper club concept, food is served until the early hours and, in keeping with the ‘no rules' theme, all drinks and dishes are available anywhere in the venue. So you can order a meal from the a la carte menu while you chill out with friends in the lounge bar, or unwind with just a glass of wine and some olives in the restaurant.
Springfield's is also well-placed to cater to the functions and events market. All areas within the venue can be hired out for functions and Springfield's team of events experts are on-hand to collaborate with clients on all the finer details.
Reflecting the relaxed, yet sophisticated, aesthetic of the venue, staff are kitted out in funky Converse trainers and Mavi jeans that are worked back with crisp Herringbone shirts. The kitchen staff are also well shod in colourful Crocs.
But what really sets Springfield's apart is its food. Best described as a mouth-watering melange of Mediterranean influences, the menu also features an extensive array of tasting plates ensuring the emphasis is on shared, tapas-style dining.
These grazing-style dishes include such tempting offerings as whitebait with cucumber, anchovy and tomato salsa and lamb and chorizo skewers with spiced green apple sauce. Ubiquitous Sydney rock oysters have been given a fresh twist with toppings like gazpacho salsa and shallot and red wine dipping sauce.
Although the shared dishes concept is Springfield's signature, the a la carte menu is also delicious boasting hearty mains like king island scotch fillet with prawns and sweet potato mash and pan fried spatchcock and interesting pasta dishes like gnocchi with black pepper and gorgonzola sauce.
And when it comes to Springfield's liquid offerings the emphasis is on local flavours. The wine list focuses on Australian wines and includes top drops like Dalwhinnie Chardonnay from Victoria's Pyrenees and St. Hallet Blackwell Shiraz from the Barossa Valley.
They've even eschewed Evian and San Pellegrino in favour of a brand of Tasmanian spring water that's coincidently called Springfield. Of course that's not to say that fabulous French champagne doesn't flow at Springfield's – with the 1999 Dom Perignon being the bubbly of choice for those with something to celebrate.
